Coming through

Driving home last night, I had a thought that I often do when I’m in traffic and am irritated by another driver who happens to be in a vehicle advertising a business.

On one hand, cars and trucks offer an easy, cheap way for a company to advertise. But there’s also a risk that when the company’s driver doesn’t drive exactly the way fellow drivers would want (Go faster! Go slower! Use your *&^#@ turn signal!) those drivers might wind up aggravated at the company, too.

It happened to me twice recently, once behind a too-slow truck advertising a construction company and once when a very well known and popular businessman would not get out of my way.

OK, so the trend here may be that I drive too fast. My employers are probably happy that I’m not driving around a car advertising The Wichita Eagle.

Sorry for your loss, but …

Poor Peggy Fossett.

First, she loses her famed aviator husband, adventurer Steve Fossett after his plane went down Sept. 3 somewhere in a remote Nevada.

Now, Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons intends to bill her for the $687,000 the state spent for a month-long, unsuccessful search, according to the Associated Press. Fossett was declared dead Feb. 15 by an Illinois judge. In that determination, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Jeffery Malak said Fossett left a “vast” eight-figure estate.

State and local government in Nevada don’t normally charge when they hunt for missing people, the AP report said. But the final decision on whether Peggy Fossett will be billed rests with the Nevada governor, who since January has cut state spending to deal with a budget shortfall.

What? 5:30 a.m.?

Ugh. I’m definitely not an early riser. On most days, I couldn’t even tell you if there really is a 5:30 a.m.

Wednesday, Spirit AeroSystems president and chief executive Jeff Turner will speak at Merrill Lynch’s Global Markets and Investment Banking Conference. And his remarks are being webcast. But here’s the kick — he’s speaking at 5:30 a.m.

I called Spirit today to inquire whether there was a mistake on the press release. Surely it was an error. No such luck. The conference is being held in London.

If you want to catch his remarks, go to Spirit’s Web site bright and early Wednesday.
