Strange hoops

Kansas lost today, beaten by DePaul in Chicago. It was a game the Jayhawks had control of until the final five minutes. Then it got away.

And you know who should be really worried about this? Wichita State basketball fans, that’s who.

Bill Self is hardly on solid ground at KU. His team has an abundance of talent, but it’s not easy to watch the Jayhawks play. They have no leadership. They don’t look to have much of a plan. It’s pretty helter-skelter stuff.

Meanwhile, down the road at WSU, Mark Turgeon is working wonders for the Shockers. I’m writing this before WSU’s game at Syracuse, but if WSU wins that game the whole playing field for basketball in the state of Kansas shifts and the Shockers become the top dog.

How do you think that will sit in Lawrence? I think you know how that will sit in Lawrence. Even with his recently-signed extension and raise, Self will really be under the miscroscope. And more and more KU fans will begin to talk about Turgeon, one of their own, and the job he could do in Lawrence.

It’s odd, because all Wichita State fans should be rooting for KU _ and for Self. Seems odd, doesn’t it? But the better Self does, the longer Turgeon is at Wichita State. Right now, I’m not sure how long the status quo can exist.
