Sir Albert

I think Albert Pujols will go down as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, but I’m nervous. He is off to such an incredible start this season (18 homers already) that it’s just a matter of time before suspicions about his potential abuse of baseball’s steroids policy come to the forefront.

I know, Major League Baseball is testing for steroids. That should be enough to clear Pujols of any suspicions. But can we really trust MLB?

I was burned once, by Mark McGwire. Nobody was more excited about his 70-home-run season in 1998. But because of what has happened since, I feel betrayed by McGwire.

And while I don’t think Pujols would ever disappoint me in that way, I’m not 100 percent sure. And that bothers me. That’s how the game has been tainted because for so long baseball turned the other way in regard to the steroids issue.

I’m a Cubs fan and even I love Albert Pujols. I can’t believe I just typed that. Something about him strikes me as different than McGwire. I never really believed in McGwire as the persona he displayed in ‘98, however I did believe in my former boy Slammin’ Sammy Corker. He is the one that I felt betrayed by. I wanted so bad to believe his story about grabbing the wrong bat, but now I think it was blatant and I am convinced he was juicing. Pujols however I think is about as pure as they come. Maybe it is because when I look at him I don’t see the ripped arms that I saw on Sosa and McGwire or the fact that Pujols head is still a normal size, but he just looks like a strong, thick, athletic dude who may end up being the best hitter ever. He will win a triple crown before he retires, he will hit more than 700 homeruns, and he will do it all legally….at least I hope because baseball needs that, I need that, and it sure sounds like you need that. So from this Cubs fan I say go Prince Albert, just don’t hit anymore game winners. ;)
