It was quite a sight seeing all of the Shocker fans in the Savvis Center in St. Louis for Wichita State’s game against Indiana State on Friday. There were more than 2,000.
I have been coming to the Valley’s postseason tournament here since 1992 and remember when the Shockers had trouble drawing 50 fans. Who could blame those who stayed home? WSU had virtually no chance of winning even a game here.
Now the Shockers are again the talk of the town. They have been the biggest story in Wichita for a few weeks now and the story shows no signs of showing down.
It reminds me of the old days _ the early to mid-1960s _ when my father would take me to Mid-Continent Airport to welcome the Shockers back from road games. I remember several hundred people doing the same thing and the gracious Shocker players patiently signing autographs.
Shocker basketball is again a big deal. It’s fun.
