An honor

Tonight, for the second consecutive year, I had the honor of being the master of ceremonies during halftime of the East-Southeast basketball game for the introduction of the 2006 East High Athletic Hall of Fame induction.

As a mater of ceremonies, I’m a darn good columnist. I’m OK, I guess. But I’m not OK when, even before the ceremony gets started, a fight breaks out in the stands. That’s a little bit distracting.

Hey, knuckleheads, there was extra security at the game because of the threat of gang violence. And you’re gonna fight? Why are some people so stupid?

The combatants were quickly whisked out of the gym. I’m a huge believer in public education and I love the seven public high schools that are members of the City League. It goes back to my memorable time as a high school reporter for The Eagle. I was involved in covering some of the best high school sports in the league’s history. And when people move out of the district to suburban schools, I defend the Wichita public schools.

But fights in the stands do more to harm the image of public schools than 10 of the great things that happen every day. It’s a shame.
