The downtown debate

Oh, this is a good one. I’m talking downtown development with Wichitans and I’m going to enjoy it.

I love the reference to CAVE people made by one of the blog readers (Citizens Against Virtually Everything). Now that’s funny. And true. This town seems to be full of people who would fight anything progressive.

Not that they’re dead wrong, either. I have to admit, I don’t have great faith in our city and county leaders to pull off what they need to pull off in the next four years _ a brand new WaterWalk and a downtown arena. That’s a large chunk when you consider we have done basically nothing to improve downtown Wichita in years.

And don’t give me Old Town, either. That was the vision of private developers, for the most part.

But, people, give this a chance. A downtown arena is badly needed; especially when you consider that the alternative was to renovate that ugly barn north of town.

This is an exciting time for Wichita. I’m generally a pessimist, just like you CAVE people. But I’m optimistic about this. Tell me why I shouldn’t be.
