AirTran dispatches first flight from new control center

When taking a commercial flight, I don’t tend to think about the dispatchers, aircraft routers, crew planners and schedulers,  maintenance operations controllers, flight followers and duty managers that go into making the flight possible — unless there’s a problem, that is.

But I’m glad the airlines do. AirTran Airways has a new system operations control center that it says will streamline its operations. The Orlando facility serves as a 24-hour command center for the airline. AirTran dispatched its first flight from the 16,000 square-foot center this morning.

The new center will provide AirTran with  increased use of technology, redundant, hurricane-resistant facilities and give the carrier room to grow, the airline said.

AirTran operates three daily flights from Wichita to its Atlanta hub.
